What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of measurement for trade size. In forex, one standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. For Serbia traders using USD accounts, this means if you buy 1 standard lot of EUR/USD, you are buying €100,000 worth of euros. However, most retail traders in Serbia do not trade standard lots due to the high capital required. Instead, brokers offer smaller lot sizes: mini lots (0.10 lot = 10,000 units), micro lots (0.01 lot = 1,000 units), and sometimes nano lots (0.001 lot = 100 units).
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
Pip value changes with lot size. For a USD-denominated account trading EUR/USD: 1 standard lot = $10 per pip, 1 mini lot = $1 per pip, 1 micro lot = $0.10 per pip. This is critical for Serbia traders because it directly impacts risk management. If you have a $500 account and trade a standard lot, a 50-pip move could wipe out your entire account. But with a micro lot, the same move costs only $5.
Practical Example for Serbia Traders
Imagine you deposit $1,000 via Skrill into your forex account. You want to trade USD/JPY. If you choose a micro lot (0.01), each pip movement is worth approximately $0.09 (depending on current exchange rate). A 100-pip move equals $9. If you choose a mini lot (0.10), each pip is worth $0.90, and a 100-pip move equals $90. This shows how choosing the right lot size protects your capital.
Choosing the Right Lot Size
Serbia traders should base lot size on account size and risk tolerance. A common rule is to risk no more than 1-2% of account per trade. For a $500 account, maximum risk per trade is $5-$10. Using a micro lot on EUR/USD ($0.10/pip), you can set a stop loss of 50-100 pips. For a mini lot ($1/pip), your stop loss should be only 5-10 pips. Many Serbia traders start with micro lots and gradually increase as they gain experience.
