How to Use Leverage Safely in Forex
What is Leverage and Why It Matters for Serbia Traders
Leverage is a loan provided by your broker that multiplies your trading position. For example, with 1:100 leverage, a $1,000 deposit lets you control $100,000 in the market. While this can increase profits, it also means a small market move against you can wipe out your entire account. In Serbia, where many traders use offshore brokers, understanding leverage is critical because you may not have local investor protection.
Choose the Right Leverage Ratio
Start with low leverage, such as 1:10 or 1:30, especially if you are new to forex. Experienced traders may use up to 1:50 or 1:100, but only after thorough testing. Avoid brokers offering leverage above 1:500, as they often target inexperienced traders. Always calculate your position size based on your account equity and risk per trade (1-2% max).
Use Stop-Loss Orders
Every trade should have a stop-loss order to limit potential losses. For example, if you buy EUR/USD at 1.1000, set a stop-loss at 1.0950 to cap your loss at 50 pips. This is non-negotiable when using leverage. Many Serbia traders forget this and lose their entire deposit.
Monitor Margin Levels
Your broker will show your margin level (equity divided by used margin). Keep it above 100% to avoid margin calls. If it falls below, your broker may close positions automatically. Check your margin daily, especially during volatile news events.
