How to Open an Islamic Forex Account
What is an Islamic Forex Account?
An Islamic Forex account, also known as a swap-free account, is a type of trading account that does not charge or pay overnight interest (swap) on positions held past the daily rollover time. This is essential for Muslim traders in Bhutan who follow Sharia law, which prohibits earning or paying interest (riba). Instead of swap fees, brokers may charge a fixed administrative fee or widen spreads to cover costs.
Why Bhutan Traders Choose Islamic Accounts
Bhutan has a small but growing retail forex community. Many traders in Thimphu, Paro, and Phuntsholing prefer Islamic accounts to align their trading with religious beliefs. Additionally, Bhutan's financial system is conservative, and Islamic accounts offer a transparent way to trade without interest. The local currency, the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), is pegged to the Indian Rupee, so trading USD/BTN or other pairs is common.
How Islamic Accounts Work
When you open a standard account, holding a position overnight incurs a swap fee (positive or negative) based on interest rate differentials. In an Islamic account, this fee is waived. However, some brokers limit the number of days you can hold a position swap-free (e.g., 30 days) before charging a small fee. Always confirm the broker's policy. For Bhutan traders, this means you can hold positions for longer without worrying about interest costs.
