How to Calculate Margin in Forex
What is Margin in Forex Trading?
Margin is not a fee or a transaction cost; it is a security deposit that your broker holds to cover potential losses. In Mozambique, retail traders typically open accounts denominated in USD. The margin requirement depends on leverage and the size of your trade.
Margin Calculation Formula
The basic formula is: Margin = (Trade Size × Contract Size × Market Price) / Leverage. For example, if you want to trade 1 mini lot (10,000 units) of USD/JPY at 110.00 with 1:100 leverage, the margin is (10,000 × 110.00) / 100 = 11,000 JPY, converted to USD (approximately $100). Mozambique traders should always use a margin calculator provided by their broker to avoid errors.
Example for Mozambique Traders
Suppose you open a 0.1 lot position on EUR/USD at 1.2000 with 1:50 leverage. The margin is (10,000 × 1.2000) / 50 = $240. If your account balance is $1,000, your used margin is $240, leaving $760 as free margin. If the trade moves against you, free margin decreases, and you may receive a margin call.
Why Margin Matters in Mozambique
With limited access to local forex education, many Mozambique traders overleverage. Understanding margin helps you size positions appropriately and protect your capital. Always keep your margin level above 100% to avoid forced liquidation.
