How a prop firm challenge works

The process is similar across firms, but the details are not.

Choose a challenge

Pick a firm, an account size and a challenge type (one-step or two-step), and pay the fee.

Hit the target within the limits

Reach the profit target without breaking the daily loss or maximum drawdown rule, and meet any trading-day requirements.

Get funded

Pass every phase and the firm opens a funded account under its terms.

Request payouts

Withdraw your share of profits on the firm's payout schedule, subject to its minimum amount and conditions.

Trading rules at a glance

Rules decide whether a strategy fits a firm. This is what our dataset records; always confirm in the firm's current rules.

How to choose a prop firm

Match the rules to your style

Check news trading, weekend holding, EAs and hedging before you pay. A strategy that breaks one rule can end the account.

Understand drawdown

Balance-based, static and trailing drawdown behave differently as your account grows. Read how the limit is calculated.

Compare the full cost

Look at the fee for your account size, whether it is refundable, and whether a free retry is offered.

Check payout terms

Compare payout frequency, minimum payout, first payout timing and the methods available in your country.

Verify the company

Prop firms are often not regulated like brokers. Confirm the legal entity, read the terms and look at independent reviews.

Start small

Begin with a smaller account size and treat the fee as money you can afford to lose.

How we compare prop firms

We list active firms in our dataset that have core data: profit targets, loss limits and profit split. Firms that have closed or paused operations are not listed. Each figure is printed only when our sources agree on it; otherwise we show a dash. Firms are ordered by the overall score in our dataset. We do not test live payouts on this page, and rules and prices can change after the date shown. We may earn a commission if you buy a challenge through some links on this page; this does not change the facts we show.

Prop firm FAQ

What is a prop firm?

A proprietary trading firm gives you the chance to trade its capital after you pass an evaluation. You pay a fee for the challenge, trade a demo or simulated account under set rules, and if you meet the targets you can receive a funded account and a share of the profits it generates. Rules and fees differ from firm to firm.

Is a prop firm the same as a broker?

No. A broker holds client money and routes your orders to the market. A prop firm sells an evaluation and, if you pass, gives you access to a funded account under its own terms. Many prop firms are not regulated in the way brokers are, so read the terms and check who the legal entity is.

How do prop firm challenges work?

Most challenges have one or two phases. In each phase you must reach a profit target without breaking the daily loss or maximum drawdown limits, and some firms also set minimum or maximum trading days. Pass every phase and the firm opens a funded account.

What is the difference between daily loss and maximum drawdown?

The daily loss limit caps how much the account can fall in one trading day. The maximum drawdown caps how far the account can fall in total. Breaking either usually ends the account. Drawdown can be balance-based, static or trailing, which changes how the limit moves as you make profit.

Do I get my challenge fee back?

It depends on the firm. Some refund the fee with your first payout if you pass, some offer a free retry, and some offer neither. Check the "Fee refundable" and "Free retry" details on each firm and confirm with the firm before you buy.

How do prop firm payouts work?

Firms set their own payout schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or on demand), a minimum payout amount and the payout methods they support. Compare these in the table before you choose, and read the firm's terms for any extra conditions.

Can I use an EA, trade news or hold over the weekend?

Each firm sets its own rules on expert advisors, news trading, weekend holding, hedging, copy trading and high-frequency strategies. The rules table on this page shows what our dataset records for each firm. Always confirm in the firm's current rules before you trade.

How do you choose which prop firms to show?

We list active firms in our dataset that have complete core data (profit target, loss limits, profit split and challenge fees). Where our sources disagree on a figure we show a dash instead of guessing. Order follows the score in our dataset.

Is prop firm trading risky?

Yes. Trading leveraged products carries a high risk of loss, and many challenge attempts do not result in a funded account, which means the fee can be lost. Only pay what you can afford to lose, and treat this page as general information, not financial advice.
