What is Overnight Fee in Forex
What Exactly is an Overnight Fee?
When you trade forex, you are essentially borrowing one currency to buy another. The overnight fee reflects the interest rate differential between these two currencies. If the interest rate on the currency you bought is higher than the one you sold, you may receive a credit; if it is lower, you pay a charge. For Romania traders, these fees are typically expressed in USD and vary by broker and currency pair.
How Does the Overnight Fee Work?
The fee is applied automatically by your broker at 5 PM New York time (11 PM or midnight in Romania, depending on daylight saving). If you hold a position open at that moment, the swap is calculated and added or subtracted from your account balance. The fee is calculated per lot (standard lot = 100,000 units) and can be positive (you receive money) or negative (you pay money). For example, if you hold 1 standard lot of USD/JPY long and the swap rate is +2 USD, you earn 2 USD per night. Conversely, if the swap rate is -3 USD, you pay 3 USD per night.
Why Does This Matter for Romania Traders?
Romania traders often trade USD pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY. The overnight fee can add up quickly if you hold positions for weeks or months. For instance, a trader holding a 0.5 lot EUR/USD position for 30 days with a -5 USD swap per lot would pay 75 USD in total fees. This can eat into profits or increase losses. Additionally, Romania traders using leverage must be aware that overnight fees are charged on the full notional value of the position, not just the margin used.
Practical Example in USD
Let's say you are a retail trader in Romania and you buy 1 lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000. Your broker's swap rate for long EUR/USD is -4.5 USD per lot per night. You hold the position for 10 days. The total overnight fee would be 10 x (-4.5 USD) = -45 USD. If you had sold EUR/USD instead, the swap might be +2 USD per lot, earning you 20 USD over the same period. Always check the swap rates in your trading platform before holding positions overnight.
