What is Overnight Fee in Forex
What Exactly is an Overnight Fee?
An overnight fee is the interest differential between the two currencies in a forex pair. When you hold a position overnight, your broker either charges you or pays you based on the interest rate difference. If you buy a currency with a higher interest rate than the one you sell, you may receive a credit. Conversely, you pay a fee if you sell the higher-yielding currency. For Gambia traders, this is particularly relevant when trading USD pairs, as the US Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions directly impact swap rates.
How is the Overnight Fee Calculated?
The fee is calculated using the formula: Swap Rate × Number of Lots × Number of Nights. For example, if you hold 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD and the swap rate is -1.5 points per lot, you would pay $1.50 per night. For Gambia traders using USD-denominated accounts, this fee is deducted in USD, making it easy to track. Brokers publish their swap rates in their trading platforms, usually in the 'Market Watch' or 'Specifications' section.
When is the Overnight Fee Applied?
The rollover time is 5:00 PM New York time (10:00 PM GMT during standard time). Any position still open at this time is subject to the overnight fee. On Wednesdays, triple swap fees are applied to account for weekend positions. For Gambia traders, this means holding a position from Wednesday to Thursday incurs three times the normal fee. Always plan your trades around these days to avoid higher costs.
Why Does it Matter for Gambia Traders?
Gambia traders often use retail forex accounts with small capital. Overnight fees can erode profits quickly if you hold positions for several days. For example, if you have a $500 account and hold a EUR/USD long position for 10 nights with a -$1.50 fee, you lose $15—3% of your capital. For Gambia traders using Skrill or Bank Transfer to fund accounts, these fees reduce the net return on your investment. Additionally, brokers regulated by the local financial authority must clearly disclose swap rates, helping you make informed decisions.
