What is Overnight Fee in Forex
What Exactly is an Overnight Fee?
An overnight fee (swap) is a charge or credit applied to your trading account when you keep a forex position open overnight. It is calculated based on the difference in interest rates between the two currencies in the pair. For example, if you buy EUR/USD, you are essentially borrowing USD and lending EUR. If the EUR interest rate is higher than the USD rate, you may receive a credit; if lower, you pay a fee. Brokers also add a small markup. For Argentina traders, this is especially relevant when trading USD pairs because the US dollar is the base for many popular pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY.
How Does It Work for Argentina Traders?
The rollover time is based on New York market close (17:00 EST). In Argentina (GMT-3), this is 18:00 local time during standard time and 19:00 during daylight saving. If you hold a position past this time, the swap is applied. The fee is shown in pips or as a daily cost in your account currency (usually USD for Argentina traders). For example, if you hold 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD with a swap rate of -0.5 pips, you pay $5 per day. On Wednesday, the fee triples because it covers the weekend. Argentina traders using USDT deposits should note that the fee is still calculated in USD and deducted from your balance.
Why It Matters for Argentina Traders Specifically
Argentina has high inflation and volatile interest rates on the peso (ARS), but most retail forex traders in Argentina trade major USD pairs, not ARS pairs. Therefore, the overnight fee depends on global interest rates (like Fed and ECB rates), not local rates. However, the cost can add up if you hold positions for weeks. Additionally, since many Argentina traders use Bank Transfer (which can be slow and costly) or Skrill (which has withdrawal fees), minimizing overnight fees by closing positions daily can save money. If you deposit via USDT, you avoid bank delays but still face swap costs. Always check your broker’s swap schedule before trading.
