What is MetaTrader 5 (MT5)
What Exactly is MetaTrader 5?
MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is a trading platform developed by MetaQuotes Software. It is the successor to MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and offers more advanced features. Unlike MT4, which is primarily for forex, MT5 supports trading in stocks, commodities, futures, and indices. It also includes an integrated economic calendar, 21 timeframes (vs. 9 in MT4), and a built-in strategy tester for automated trading.
Key Features for Philippines Traders
MT5 offers advanced charting tools with 38 technical indicators and 44 analytical objects. You can analyze USD/PHP, EUR/USD, gold, oil, and even Philippine stocks if your broker offers them. The platform supports Expert Advisors (EAs) for automated trading, which is useful for OFW investors who cannot monitor charts all day. You can also copy trades from successful traders using social trading features available on some brokers.
How Much Does It Cost?
MT5 itself is free to download and use. You only pay spreads and commissions to your broker. For example, if you trade 1 lot of EUR/USD with a 1.5 pip spread, the cost is approximately ₱800 to ₱1,000 per trade depending on the broker. Micro accounts allow you to trade with as little as ₱500 capital.
Getting Started
To start with MT5, choose a broker that is registered with SEC Philippines or a reputable international regulator. Download the MT5 platform from your broker's website or the official MetaQuotes site. Open a demo account first to practice. Once comfortable, fund your live account using GCash, PayMaya, or USDT and start trading.
