What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of trading size. The standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. For example, buying 1 standard lot of EUR/USD means you are buying 100,000 euros. However, retail traders in Vanuatu rarely trade standard lots due to high capital requirements. Instead, brokers offer mini lots (10,000 units), micro lots (1,000 units), and even nano lots (100 units).
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
Pip value changes with lot size. For a USD-denominated account, one pip on a standard lot is worth $10, on a mini lot $1, on a micro lot $0.10, and on a nano lot $0.01. This means a 10-pip move on a micro lot equals just $1, while the same move on a standard lot equals $100. Vanuatu traders must calculate pip value before entering a trade to ensure they are comfortable with the potential loss.
Example for Vanuatu Traders
Suppose you deposit $500 via Skrill into your trading account. If you trade 0.10 lots (a mini lot) of USD/JPY, each pip is worth about $1 (depending on the pair). A 50-pip loss would cost $50, which is 10% of your account. If you traded 0.01 lots (micro lot), the same loss would be only $5. Choosing smaller lot sizes protects your capital.
Margin and Leverage
Lot size also determines margin. With 1:100 leverage, trading 1 standard lot of EUR/USD requires $1,000 margin. For a micro lot, only $10 margin is needed. Vanuatu brokers often offer high leverage up to 1:500, which can magnify profits but also losses. Always use a lot size that keeps your margin below 10% of your account balance.
