What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is Lot Size?
In forex, a lot is a standardized unit of trade size. The standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. However, most retail brokers offer smaller lot sizes to accommodate traders with smaller capital. For Tunisia traders, the most common lot sizes are:
- Standard Lot (1.00): 100,000 units – pip value ~$10 in USD pairs
- Mini Lot (0.10): 10,000 units – pip value ~$1
- Micro Lot (0.01): 1,000 units – pip value ~$0.10
- Nano Lot (0.001): 100 units – pip value ~$0.01 (rarely offered)
How Lot Size Affects Your Trading in Tunisia
Your lot size determines the notional value of your trade. For example, if you buy 0.10 lots of EUR/USD at 1.1000 with a USD account, you are buying €11,000 worth of euros. The margin required depends on your broker’s leverage. With 1:100 leverage, you need only $110 margin for a mini lot. This makes retail forex trading accessible to Tunisia traders with modest capital.
Why Lot Size Matters for Risk Management
Choosing the right lot size is the cornerstone of risk management. A common rule is to risk no more than 1-2% of your account per trade. For a $1,000 account, that means maximum risk of $10-$20 per trade. If you trade a standard lot, a 20-pip stop loss would cost $200 – far too much. But with a micro lot, the same 20-pip loss is only $2. Tunisia traders should always calculate position size based on account balance and stop loss distance.
Practical Example in USD for Tunisia Traders
Suppose you have a $2,000 account and want to trade USD/JPY. You set a stop loss of 30 pips. With a micro lot (0.01), each pip is worth $0.10, so risk is 30 x $0.10 = $3 (0.15% of account). With a mini lot (0.10), risk becomes $30 (1.5% of account). Choose based on your risk tolerance. Most Tunisia beginners start with micro lots until they gain experience.
