What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot Size?
A lot size in forex refers to the number of currency units you trade. The standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. However, brokers offer smaller fractions to accommodate retail traders like those in Slovakia. The most common lot sizes are:
- Standard Lot: 100,000 units – Each pip movement in USD pairs equals $10.
- Mini Lot: 10,000 units – Each pip equals $1.
- Micro Lot: 1,000 units – Each pip equals $0.10.
- Nano Lot: 100 units – Each pip equals $0.01 (less common).
How Lot Size Works in Practice
When you open a trade, you choose a lot size. This determines your position size, which in turn affects margin and risk. For example, if you buy 1 standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000, you are buying €100,000 worth of dollars. With 1:30 leverage (maximum for retail in Slovakia), you need a margin of about $3,666. If the price moves 10 pips against you, you lose $100. That is a significant loss for a small account.
Why Lot Size Matters for Slovakia Traders
Slovakia traders often start with limited capital, sometimes as low as €200–€500. Using a standard lot would blow up your account quickly. Instead, micro lots (0.01 lot) allow you to risk only $0.10 per pip, giving you room to learn without losing everything. Many Slovak brokers also offer fractional lot sizes down to 0.01, making it accessible for small accounts funded via Skrill or USDT.
Calculating Pip Value for USD Accounts
Since your trading account is in USD, pip value is straightforward for USD pairs. For EUR/USD, one pip on a standard lot is $10; on a mini lot it’s $1; on a micro lot it’s $0.10. For cross pairs like GBP/JPY, pip value varies, but most trading platforms show it automatically. Always check the pip value before entering a trade to manage risk properly.
