What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is Lot Size?
A 'lot' is a standardized unit of measurement in forex trading. The standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. For example, buying 1 standard lot of EUR/USD means you are buying 100,000 Euros. However, retail brokers offer smaller lot sizes to accommodate traders with different account sizes.
Types of Lot Sizes
There are four main types: Standard Lot (100,000 units), Mini Lot (10,000 units), Micro Lot (1,000 units), and Nano Lot (100 units). Most Senegal retail brokers offer mini and micro lots, with some offering nano lots. The pip value varies: for a standard lot on USD pairs, 1 pip = $10; mini lot = $1; micro lot = $0.10; nano lot = $0.01.
How Lot Size Affects Your Trading
Lot size directly impacts your margin requirement and risk. For example, if you deposit $500 via Skrill and use 1:100 leverage, a standard lot trade would require $1,000 margin (more than your deposit), so you cannot open it. A mini lot would require $100 margin, leaving $400 for other trades. A micro lot requires only $10 margin. Choosing a smaller lot size allows you to stay in the market longer and manage risk better.
Lot Size and Risk Management
For Senegal traders, the golden rule is to never risk more than 1-2% of your account on a single trade. If you have a $300 account, your maximum risk per trade is $3-6. With a micro lot (pip value $0.10), you can set a stop loss of 30-60 pips and stay within your risk limit. With a mini lot (pip value $1), your stop loss would be only 3-6 pips, which is too tight for most strategies.
Practical Example for Senegal Traders
Suppose you deposit $200 via USDT into your forex account. You want to trade EUR/USD. If you use 1:200 leverage, your margin for 0.01 lots is about $0.50. Your pip value is $0.10. If you set a stop loss of 50 pips, your maximum loss is $5 (2.5% of account). This is a reasonable risk. If you instead trade 0.10 lots (pip value $1), a 50-pip loss would be $50 (25% of account), which is too risky.
