What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of trade size. In forex, the most common lot sizes are: Standard Lot (100,000 units), Mini Lot (10,000 units), Micro Lot (1,000 units), and Nano Lot (100 units). For Paraguay traders, the standard lot is often too large for retail accounts, so mini and micro lots are more practical.
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
Pip value changes with lot size. For a USD-denominated account: one standard lot of EUR/USD gives a pip value of 10 USD. A mini lot gives 1 USD per pip, and a micro lot gives 0.10 USD per pip. If you are a Paraguay trader with a 500 USD account, trading a standard lot would risk 10 USD per pip — a 50-pip loss would wipe out your entire account. This is why smaller lot sizes are critical for capital preservation.
Practical Example for Paraguay Traders
Suppose you deposit 1,000 USD via Skrill into your trading account. You want to trade USD/JPY. If you buy one mini lot (10,000 units) and the price moves 100 pips in your favor, you earn 100 USD (1 USD per pip). If you had used a micro lot (1,000 units), you would earn only 10 USD. The choice depends on your risk tolerance and account size. Always calculate your maximum loss per trade before entering.
Choosing the Right Lot Size for Your Account
A common rule is to risk no more than 1-2% of your account per trade. For a 500 USD account, that means a maximum loss of 5-10 USD per trade. If your stop loss is 50 pips, you can trade a micro lot (0.50 USD per pip × 50 pips = 25 USD loss) — but that exceeds 2%. So you would need an even smaller lot, like 0.02 micro lots (0.02 USD per pip), to stay within risk limits. Paraguay traders should use a position size calculator to match lot size with stop loss distance.
