What is Lot Size in Forex
What is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of trade size. The forex market uses four main lot types: standard lot (100,000 units), mini lot (10,000 units), micro lot (1,000 units), and nano lot (100 units). For North Macedonia retail traders, micro and mini lots are most common because they allow smaller account balances to participate without excessive risk.
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
Each lot size has a fixed pip value. For USD-denominated accounts, one standard lot on EUR/USD equals $10 per pip, one mini lot equals $1 per pip, and one micro lot equals $0.10 per pip. If you are trading from North Macedonia with a $500 account, a standard lot would risk $10 per pip – far too high. A micro lot risks only $0.10 per pip, giving you room to trade with a 50-pip stop loss while risking just $5.
Example for North Macedonia Traders
Imagine you deposit $1,000 via Skrill into your broker account. You want to trade EUR/USD with a 30-pip stop loss. Using a micro lot (0.01 lots), each pip is $0.10, so your total risk is 30 × $0.10 = $3. That is 0.3% of your account – very safe. If you used a mini lot (0.10 lots), your risk would be $30 (3% of account), which is still acceptable but higher. A standard lot would risk $300 (30%) – not advisable.
Choosing the Right Lot Size
Your lot size should match your account size, risk tolerance, and trading strategy. A common rule is to risk no more than 1–2% of your account per trade. For a $2,000 account, that means risking $20–$40. With a 20-pip stop loss, you can trade a mini lot (risk $20) or a micro lot (risk $2). Always use a position size calculator provided by your broker or a third-party tool.
