What is Lot Size in Forex
What is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of trade. The most common sizes are:
Standard Lot: 100,000 units of base currency (e.g., $100,000 USD).
Mini Lot: 10,000 units.
Micro Lot: 1,000 units.
Nano Lot: 100 units (rare but available).
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
For USD-denominated accounts, one pip (0.0001) on a standard lot equals $10. On a mini lot, it's $1; on a micro lot, $0.10. For Nauru traders using USD as base currency, this means a 10-pip move on a standard lot changes your account by $100. With a micro lot, it's only $1.
Calculating Position Size
To calculate lot size, use the formula:
Lot Size = (Risk Amount) / (Stop Loss in Pips × Pip Value per Lot).
Example: You risk $20 on a trade with a 20-pip stop loss. If you trade micro lots (pip value $0.10), your lot size = $20 / (20 × $0.10) = 10 micro lots (0.10 lot). This is a mini lot.
Leverage and Lot Size
Leverage amplifies lot size. With 1:100 leverage, you control $100,000 with $1,000 margin. Nauru traders should use leverage cautiously. The local financial authority recommends maximum 1:50 leverage for retail traders to limit risk.
