What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is Lot Size?
A lot is a standardized unit of measurement in forex trading. The standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. For example, if you trade EUR/USD, one standard lot means you are buying or selling 100,000 Euros. For USD-based pairs like USD/MXN, one standard lot equals 100,000 USD. However, retail brokers now offer smaller lot sizes: mini lots (10,000 units), micro lots (1,000 units), and nano lots (100 units).
Why Lot Size Matters for Mexico Traders
Lot size directly impacts your pip value. In a USD-denominated account, one standard lot gives a pip value of $10 USD. A mini lot gives $1 per pip, and a micro lot gives $0.10 per pip. For Mexico traders, this means if you have a $1,000 account and trade a standard lot, a 50-pip loss wipes out half your account. With a micro lot, the same loss is only $5 USD. Choosing the correct lot size is your first line of risk management.
Practical Example with USD
Suppose you deposit $500 USD via Skrill into your broker account. You decide to trade USD/MXN at 1 standard lot. The price moves 20 pips against you. Your loss = 20 pips × $10 = $200 USD — that's 40% of your account. Now, if you trade 0.05 lots (5,000 units), each pip is worth $0.50 USD. A 20-pip loss is only $10 USD, or 2% of your account. This shows why lot size is critical for preserving capital.
