What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is Lot Size in Forex?
Lot size is the standardized quantity of currency you buy or sell in a forex trade. It is the foundation of position sizing. The three main types are:
- Standard Lot (1.00): 100,000 units. For EUR/USD, one pip is worth $10. This is best for experienced traders with large accounts.
- Mini Lot (0.10): 10,000 units. One pip = $1. Suitable for intermediate traders.
- Micro Lot (0.01): 1,000 units. One pip = $0.10. Ideal for beginners and small accounts.
How Lot Size Works in Practice
When you open a trade, the lot size determines how much profit or loss each pip movement creates. For example, if you buy 1 standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000 and the price moves to 1.1010, you gain 10 pips × $10 = $100 profit. With a micro lot, the same move yields only $1.
Why Lot Size Matters for Malta Traders
Malta retail traders often start with small capital, sometimes just $200–$500. Using a standard lot would risk your entire account on a small move. Micro lots allow you to trade with minimal risk while learning. Also, brokers regulated by the local financial authority require clear lot size disclosures, helping you make informed decisions.
