What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is the number of currency units you buy or sell in a trade. In the forex market, trades are executed in specific lot sizes. The standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency (e.g., USD in EUR/USD). For Hungary traders trading USD pairs, this means if you buy 1 standard lot of EUR/USD, you are buying €100,000 worth of dollars. However, most retail traders in Hungary do not have the capital to trade standard lots, so brokers offer smaller options.
Types of Lot Sizes for Hungary Traders
Standard Lot (1.00): 100,000 units. A 1-pip movement in a USD pair equals $10. This is typically only suitable for professional or institutional traders.
Mini Lot (0.10): 10,000 units. 1 pip = $1. Commonly used by experienced retail traders in Hungary.
Micro Lot (0.01): 1,000 units. 1 pip = $0.10. Ideal for beginners and small accounts.
Nano Lot (0.001): 100 units. 1 pip = $0.01. Offered by some brokers for ultra-low risk trading.
How Lot Size Affects Your Trading in Hungary
Lot size directly influences margin and risk. For example, if you open a trade with 0.10 lot (mini lot) on EUR/USD at 1.1000, the notional value is €10,000. With 1:30 leverage (common under local financial authority rules), you need about $367 margin. If the price moves 50 pips against you, you lose $50. Hungary traders must match lot size to account balance — risking no more than 1-2% per trade is a common rule.
Practical Example with USD for Hungary
Suppose you deposit $1,000 via Skrill and want to trade USD/JPY. If you choose a micro lot (0.01), each pip is worth about $0.10 (depending on pair). A 20-pip move means a $2 gain or loss. This allows you to stay in the trade longer and manage risk. If you chose a standard lot, the same 20-pip move would be $200 — wiping out 20% of your account. Lot size is your primary risk control tool.
