What is Lot Size in Forex
What is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of measurement in forex trading. The most common lot sizes are: Standard Lot (100,000 units of base currency), Mini Lot (10,000 units), Micro Lot (1,000 units), and Nano Lot (100 units). For example, if you trade 1 standard lot of EUR/USD, you are buying or selling 100,000 euros.
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
Pip value changes with lot size. For a USD-denominated account trading EUR/USD: 1 standard lot = $10 per pip, 1 mini lot = $1 per pip, 1 micro lot = $0.10 per pip. This means a 10-pip move on a standard lot results in a $100 gain or loss, while on a micro lot it's only $1. For Honduras traders with small accounts (e.g., $200-$1,000), micro lots are safer because they limit risk.
Choosing the Right Lot Size for Your Account
Risk management is key. A common rule is to risk no more than 1-2% of your account per trade. For a $500 account, 2% is $10. If your stop loss is 50 pips, you should trade a lot size where 50 pips = $10, which is about 0.02 lots (mini lot) or 0.20 micro lots. Use a lot size calculator to match your stop loss and risk percentage.
Leverage and Lot Size
Leverage amplifies lot size. With 1:100 leverage, you can control $100,000 with $1,000 margin. But higher leverage increases risk. In Honduras, many brokers offer high leverage, but it's wise to use lower leverage (e.g., 1:30 or 1:50) with smaller lot sizes to avoid margin calls.
