What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of measurement in forex trading. It tells you how many units of the base currency you are buying or selling. There are four main lot sizes: standard lot (100,000 units), mini lot (10,000 units), micro lot (1,000 units), and nano lot (100 units). For Ethiopia traders, micro and mini lots are most practical because they allow you to trade with smaller capital.
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
Pip value depends on lot size. For example, if you trade EUR/USD and the price moves 1 pip, a standard lot gives you $10, a mini lot gives $1, and a micro lot gives $0.10. If you deposit $500 via Bank Transfer and trade a micro lot, a 50-pip move only changes your account by $5 — manageable risk. But if you trade a standard lot, the same move costs $500, which could wipe out your account.
Lot Size and Margin Requirements
Margin is the amount you need to open a trade. With 1:100 leverage, a standard lot requires $1,000 margin, a mini lot requires $100, and a micro lot requires $10. For Ethiopian traders using USDT deposits, this means you can control a larger position with less capital, but leverage also amplifies losses. Always calculate margin before entering a trade.
Choosing the Right Lot Size for Your Account
A general rule is to risk no more than 1–2% of your account per trade. If you have a $500 account (common for Ethiopia retail traders), your maximum risk per trade is $5–$10. That means you should trade micro lots (0.01) so that a 50-pip stop loss costs $5. Never trade a lot size that exceeds your risk tolerance.
