What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of measurement in forex trading. The standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. For example, if you trade EUR/USD, one standard lot means you are buying or selling 100,000 euros. However, most retail traders in Eritrea use smaller lot sizes due to limited capital.
Types of Lot Sizes
There are four main lot sizes: standard (1.0 lot = 100,000 units), mini (0.1 lot = 10,000 units), micro (0.01 lot = 1,000 units), and nano (0.001 lot = 100 units). For Eritrea traders, micro lots are most common because they allow trading with small deposits. For example, with a $100 account, you can trade 0.01 lots on EUR/USD with a pip value of $0.10.
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
Pip value changes with lot size. For a USD-denominated account, one pip on a standard lot is worth $10, on a mini lot $1, and on a micro lot $0.10. If you are trading EUR/USD and the price moves 50 pips, a standard lot would give a $500 profit or loss, while a micro lot would give $5. This is why Eritrea traders should start with micro lots to manage risk.
Lot Size and Margin
Margin is the amount required to open a trade. With 1:100 leverage, a standard lot in EUR/USD requires $1,000 margin. A micro lot requires only $10. Since many Eritrea traders deposit via Bank Transfer or Skrill with small amounts, using micro or mini lots helps avoid margin calls. Always calculate margin before trading.
Practical Example for Eritrea Traders
Suppose you deposit $200 via USDT into your forex account. You want to trade USD/JPY. If you choose a micro lot (0.01), each pip move is about ¥100 (roughly $0.70). If the market moves 100 pips, your profit/loss is $70. With a mini lot (0.1), it would be $700 — too risky for a $200 account. So lot size directly controls your exposure.
