What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of measurement in forex trading. The standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. However, brokers catering to retail traders in Cyprus also offer mini lots (10,000 units), micro lots (1,000 units), and even nano lots (100 units). This flexibility allows Cyprus traders to participate with smaller account balances.
How Lot Size Affects Pip Value
Pip value changes based on lot size. For a USD-denominated account: a standard lot (100,000 units) gives a pip value of $10, a mini lot (10,000 units) gives $1, and a micro lot (1,000 units) gives $0.10. For example, if a Cyprus trader buys EUR/USD at 1.1000 and the price moves to 1.1010 (10 pips), a micro lot position would yield a profit of $1.00, while a standard lot would yield $100.
Margin Requirements and Leverage
CySEC-regulated brokers offer leverage up to 30:1 for major pairs. This means to trade one standard lot of EUR/USD (100,000 units), you need approximately $3,333 in margin (100,000 / 30). For a micro lot, margin drops to around $33. Cyprus traders using e-wallets like Skrill or crypto like USDT should calculate margin carefully to avoid margin calls.
Practical Example for Cyprus Traders
Suppose you deposit $1,000 via Bank Transfer into a CySEC-regulated broker. With 30:1 leverage, you can trade up to 0.30 standard lots (30,000 units) maximum. However, a safer approach is to trade micro lots (0.01 lot = 1,000 units) with a pip value of $0.10. If you risk 2% per trade ($20), you can set a stop loss of 200 pips ($20 / $0.10). This structured approach helps Cyprus traders manage risk while learning the markets.
