What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of measurement for forex trades. The standard lot represents 100,000 units of the base currency. For example, buying 1 standard lot of EUR/USD means you are buying 100,000 euros. However, retail brokers allow smaller lot sizes to accommodate traders with less capital.
Types of Lot Sizes
There are three main lot sizes: Standard lot (100,000 units), Mini lot (10,000 units), and Micro lot (1,000 units). Some brokers also offer Nano lots (100 units). For Congo traders using USD accounts, these lot sizes have specific pip values. On EUR/USD, one standard lot has a pip value of $10, one mini lot $1, and one micro lot $0.10.
How Lot Size Affects Your Trade
Lot size determines how much each pip movement is worth. If you trade 0.01 micro lots on EUR/USD and the price moves 50 pips, your profit or loss is $5 (50 pips × $0.10). This makes micro lots ideal for beginners in Congo who want to practice with small capital. Using larger lot sizes amplifies both gains and losses.
Margin and Leverage
Margin is the amount required to open a trade. With 1:100 leverage, a standard lot on EUR/USD requires $1,000 margin. A micro lot requires only $10 margin. Congo traders should always check margin requirements before trading, especially when using high leverage offered by some brokers.
