What is Lot Size in Forex
What Exactly is a Lot in Forex?
A lot is a standardized unit of trade size. The standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency. For Albania traders using USD-denominated accounts, a standard lot of EUR/USD means you are buying or selling €100,000. This is a large amount, and each pip movement (the smallest price change) is worth $10. Because most retail traders in Albania start with small capital, trading standard lots is often too risky without proper risk management.
Types of Lot Sizes
Forex offers four main lot sizes: standard (100,000 units), mini (10,000 units), micro (1,000 units), and nano (100 units). For Albania traders, micro and mini lots are most practical. A micro lot on EUR/USD gives a pip value of $0.10, meaning a 100-pip move results in a $10 gain or loss. A mini lot gives $1 per pip. This granularity allows you to fine-tune your risk based on your account balance.
How Lot Size Works in Practice for Albania Traders
When you open a trade on your broker platform, you select a lot size. For example, if you have a $500 account and want to risk 2% per trade, your maximum loss is $10. If your stop loss is 20 pips, you need a pip value of $0.50. That means you can trade a 0.05 standard lot (5 micro lots). Using a micro lot (0.01) would only risk $2 per 20-pip loss, which is conservative. Always calculate lot size before entering a trade.
