What is a Pip in Forex
A pip measures the change in value between two currencies. For example, if EUR/USD moves from 1.1050 to 1.1051, that 0.0001 increase is one pip. For USD/JPY, which uses two decimal places, a pip is 0.01. The pip value depends on your lot size. A standard lot (100,000 units) gives a pip value of $10 for USD pairs. A mini lot (10,000 units) equals $1 per pip, and a micro lot (1,000 units) equals $0.10 per pip. To calculate pip value for any pair: (one pip / exchange rate) × lot size. For example, if you trade one mini lot of EUR/USD at 1.1050, each pip is worth (0.0001 / 1.1050) × 10,000 = $0.90. However, most brokers simplify this by showing pip values in your account currency. For Kyrgyzstan traders, using USD accounts means pip values are straightforward. Many brokers also offer fractional pips (pipettes) which are 1/10th of a pip. This allows for tighter spreads but requires attention to detail. When you open a trade, the spread (difference between bid and ask) is measured in pips and represents your immediate cost. For example, a 2 pip spread on a standard lot costs $20. Understanding pips helps you set stop-loss and take-profit levels. A 50 pip stop-loss on a mini lot limits your loss to $50. Always consider the pip value before entering a trade, especially when using leverage common in Kyrgyzstan retail forex trading.
