How to Verify a Forex Broker Regulation
Why Regulation Matters for Liechtenstein Traders
Regulation ensures your broker follows strict rules to protect your money. The FMA requires brokers to segregate client funds, provide negative balance protection, and submit to regular audits. Without regulation, you have no recourse if the broker disappears or refuses withdrawals.
Step 1: Find the Broker’s License Number
Every regulated broker displays its license number on its website, usually in the footer or ‘About Us’ page. For Liechtenstein, look for a license from the FMA. If the broker claims to be regulated by another EU authority like CySEC or BaFin, check if they also have permission to operate in Liechtenstein under the EU passporting regime.
Step 2: Verify on the FMA Website
Go to the FMA’s official website (www.fma-li.li) and use the ‘Company Register’ or ‘License Search’ tool. Enter the broker’s license number or name. The register will show the broker’s status (active, revoked, or suspended). If the broker is not listed, it is not regulated in Liechtenstein.
Step 3: Check for Red Flags
Even if a broker appears on the FMA register, watch for red flags: promises of guaranteed profits, pressure to deposit quickly, or requests for remote access to your computer. Also, verify that the broker’s website URL matches the one listed on the FMA register to avoid fake clones.
Step 4: Confirm Payment Method Safety
In Liechtenstein, common deposit methods include Bank Transfer, Skrill, and USDT. Regulated brokers process withdrawals to the same method used for deposit. If a broker insists on a different payment method or charges excessive fees, it’s a warning sign. Always test with a small deposit first.
