How to Verify a Forex Broker Regulation
Why Regulation Matters for Azerbaijani Traders
Regulation ensures the broker follows strict financial rules, keeps client funds in segregated accounts, and provides dispute resolution. In Azerbaijan, the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) is the primary financial regulator. Brokers licensed by the CBA must comply with local laws. International regulators like the FCA (UK), CySEC (Cyprus), and FSA (Seychelles) also offer protection. Trading with an unregulated broker means zero legal recourse if something goes wrong.
Step 1: Identify the Regulator
Every regulated broker displays its license number and regulator name on its website footer. For Azerbaijan, look for 'Central Bank of Azerbaijan' or 'CBA'. For international brokers, check for FCA, CySEC, ASIC, or FSA. Write down the license number.
Step 2: Visit the Regulator's Official Website
Go directly to the regulator's website — not via any link from the broker. For CBA, visit cbar.az. For FCA, visit fca.org.uk. Search for the 'Register' or 'Financial Services Register' section.
Step 3: Enter the License Number
Type the license number exactly as shown on the broker's website. The register will show the broker's legal name, status (authorized or not), and permissions. If the broker is not listed, it is unregulated.
Step 4: Check the Broker's Name and Permissions
Ensure the legal name matches exactly. Check that the broker is authorized to offer forex trading to retail clients. Some brokers are only authorized for corporate clients. Also note if the regulator covers Azerbaijan — some international regulators only cover clients in their home country.
Step 5: Look for Warnings or Scam Alerts
Many regulators publish warnings about unregulated brokers. Check the CBA website for any alerts. Also search online for 'broker name + scam' or 'broker name + Azerbaijan complaint'.
Step 6: Verify the Broker's Local Presence
A regulated broker in Azerbaijan should have a local office or representative. Contact them via phone or email listed on the CBA register. If they don't answer or provide vague information, be cautious.
Step 7: Test Customer Support
Call or email the broker's support team. Ask for their regulation number and regulator name. A legitimate broker will provide this immediately. If they avoid the question, do not deposit.
