How to Use MetaTrader 5 (MT5)
What is MetaTrader 5 (MT5)?
MetaTrader 5 is a multi-asset trading platform developed by MetaQuotes. It supports forex, commodities, indices, and cryptocurrencies. For Sri Lanka traders, MT5 offers advanced charting, technical indicators, and automated trading via Expert Advisors (EAs). It is available on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
Downloading and Installing MT5 in Sri Lanka
To get MT5, you can download it directly from your broker’s website or from the official MetaQuotes site. For mobile users, search 'MetaTrader 5' in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Sri Lanka internet speeds are generally sufficient for downloading the app, but ensure a stable connection for real-time trading.
Setting Up Your MT5 Account
After installation, open MT5 and select 'Open an account'. Enter your broker’s server name (provided by your broker). Then log in with your account credentials (login ID and password). If you don’t have a live account, you can open a demo account first to practice. For Sri Lanka traders, setting the account currency to USD is recommended to avoid exchange rate fluctuations.
Understanding the MT5 Interface
The MT5 interface includes a Market Watch window (showing prices), a Chart window (for analysis), a Navigator panel (for indicators and EAs), and a Terminal (for trade history and account info). Sri Lanka traders should familiarize themselves with the 'Order' window to set stop-loss and take-profit levels.
Placing a Trade
To place a trade, right-click on a symbol in Market Watch and select 'New Order'. Choose your trade size (lots), set stop-loss and take-profit, then click 'Buy' or 'Sell'. For example, if you are trading USD/LKR, you can speculate on the exchange rate movement. Always use risk management tools.
Using Technical Indicators
MT5 comes with over 80 built-in indicators like Moving Averages, RSI, and MACD. To add an indicator, drag it from the Navigator onto your chart. Sri Lanka traders often use these to analyze USD/LKR or gold prices. You can also create custom indicators if needed.
Automated Trading with Expert Advisors (EAs)
MT5 supports automated trading through EAs. You can purchase or code your own EA. For Sri Lanka traders, EAs can help trade 24/5 without manual intervention. However, test EAs on a demo account first to avoid losses.
