How to Use MetaTrader 5 (MT5)
What is MetaTrader 5 (MT5)?
MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is a multi-asset trading platform developed by MetaQuotes. It is the successor to MT4 and offers advanced tools for forex, stocks, commodities, and indices. For Russia traders, MT5 provides a stable, feature-rich environment with real-time quotes, advanced charting, and automated trading via Expert Advisors (EAs).
How to Download and Install MT5 in Russia
First, choose a broker regulated by the local financial authority (Bank of Russia). After registration, go to the broker's website and download the MT5 installer for Windows. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. For mobile, search for 'MetaTrader 5' on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store – both are accessible in Russia without VPN. After installation, open the platform and select 'Login to an existing account' using your broker-provided login, password, and server.
Navigating the MT5 Interface
The MT5 interface consists of the Market Watch (list of tradable instruments), the Chart Window (price charts), the Navigator (account info and EAs), and the Toolbox (trade history, alerts, and news). For Russia traders, set the chart to Moscow time (UTC+3) by right-clicking the chart and selecting 'Properties' > 'Time'. This aligns with local trading hours.
Placing Your First Trade
Double-click on a currency pair in Market Watch to open a trading ticket. Set the volume (lot size), stop loss, and take profit levels. For Russia traders, use USD-denominated accounts to avoid RUB volatility. Click 'Buy' or 'Sell' to execute. Always use stop-loss orders to manage risk.
Using Expert Advisors (EAs) on MT5
MT5 supports automated trading via EAs. To use an EA, drag it from the Navigator onto a chart. Ensure your broker allows EAs – some Russia-regulated brokers restrict them. Test EAs on a demo account first, especially if using strategies from Russian-language forums.
Adding Custom Indicators and Scripts
You can download custom indicators from the MQL5 marketplace or Russian trading communities. To install, place the .ex5 file in the 'Indicators' folder inside the MT5 data directory (File > Open Data Folder). Restart MT5 and the indicator will appear in the Navigator.
