How to Use MetaTrader 5 (MT5)
Understanding the MT5 Interface
MetaTrader 5 features a multi-asset interface that includes forex, stocks, commodities, and indices. The main window is divided into the Market Watch panel (showing live prices), the Chart window, and the Navigator panel (for account and indicator management). French traders can customize the layout by dragging panels or saving workspace profiles. The platform supports 38 built-in indicators and 44 analytical objects, making it ideal for technical analysis.
Placing Your First Trade
To place a trade in MT5, right-click on an asset in Market Watch and select 'New Order'. A window will appear where you can set the trade volume (in lots), stop loss, and take profit levels. For French traders, note that leverage is capped at 1:30 for majors under AMF rules. Always use stop losses to manage risk, especially given the volatility of forex markets. You can also set pending orders like 'Buy Limit' or 'Sell Stop' for automated entries.
Using Indicators and Expert Advisors (EAs)
MT5 allows you to apply indicators from the 'Insert' menu. Popular choices among French traders include Moving Averages, RSI, and Bollinger Bands. For automated trading, you can install Expert Advisors (EAs) in the 'Navigator' panel. However, be cautious with third-party EAs—only use those from trusted sources. The AMF warns against unregulated EA providers that promise unrealistic returns.
Managing Your Account Settings
Access account settings via 'Tools' > 'Options'. Here you can set your currency to USD (as required for this guide), choose a chart color scheme, and configure push notifications for mobile alerts. French traders should enable two-factor authentication (2FA) if offered by their broker for added security. The platform also supports one-click trading, which can be activated in the 'Trade' tab.
