How to Use Leverage Safely in Forex
What is Leverage and How Does It Work?
Leverage is a loan provided by your broker that multiplies your trading power. For example, with 1:100 leverage, a $100 deposit allows you to trade $10,000 worth of currency. In Ukraine, brokers often offer leverage from 1:10 to 1:500. While high leverage can increase profits, it also magnifies losses. For instance, a 1% market move against a 1:100 leveraged position results in a 100% loss of your margin.
Choosing the Right Leverage Level
For Ukrainian beginners, start with low leverage (1:10 or 1:20) to minimize risk. Experienced traders may use 1:50 or 1:100, but never more than you can afford to lose. Consider your account size: a $500 account with 1:100 leverage means you can trade $50,000, which is risky. Use a leverage calculator on your broker’s platform to set appropriate levels.
Risk Management Strategies
Always use stop-loss orders to limit losses. For example, if you trade EUR/USD with a $1,000 account and 1:50 leverage, set a stop-loss at 20 pips to risk only $20. Also, diversify your trades and avoid over-leveraging by using no more than 5% of your account per trade. Ukrainian traders should also monitor geopolitical events that affect the UAH exchange rate.
Using Margin Wisely
Margin is the amount required to open a leveraged trade. For instance, with 1:30 leverage, a $10,000 position requires $333.33 margin. Keep your margin level above 100% to avoid margin calls. Brokers in Ukraine often provide real-time margin monitoring in MT4/MT5. If your margin level drops below 100%, you may receive a margin call or have positions closed automatically.
