How to Use Leverage Safely in Forex
What Is Leverage in Forex?
Leverage is a loan provided by your broker that allows you to trade larger amounts than your account balance. For example, with 1:100 leverage, a $100 deposit lets you control $10,000 in the market. While this can increase profits, it also means losses are calculated on the full position size.
Why Leverage Is Risky for Fiji Traders
Many Fiji traders are attracted to high leverage (1:500 or more) because it promises quick gains. However, a sudden market move of just 20 pips can wipe out your entire account. For instance, if you trade 1 standard lot on EUR/USD with 1:500 leverage and the market moves 20 pips against you, you lose $200 – which may be your whole deposit. Always use a demo account to practice before trading with real money.
How to Calculate Safe Leverage
A safe rule is to never risk more than 1-2% of your trading capital on a single trade. If your account is $1,000, your maximum risk per trade should be $10-$20. To determine safe leverage, divide your maximum loss by your stop-loss distance. For example, if you set a 20-pip stop-loss, you can trade a mini lot (0.1) with 1:10 leverage to keep risk low.
Fiji-Specific Considerations
Fiji traders often use Bank Transfer, Skrill, or USDT to fund accounts. When choosing a broker, ensure they accept these methods and offer low spreads. Also, check if the broker provides negative balance protection – this means you cannot lose more than your deposit, which is vital when using high leverage.
