How to Use Leverage Safely in Forex
What is Leverage and How Does It Work?
Leverage allows you to control a larger position with a smaller amount of capital. For example, with 1:100 leverage, a $1,000 deposit can control $100,000 in the market. In Costa Rica, many brokers offer leverage up to 1:500, but this increases risk significantly.
Choosing the Right Leverage for Your Strategy
Your trading style determines the safest leverage. Scalpers may use 1:50 or 1:100, but swing traders should stick to 1:10 or 1:20. For Costa Rica traders, consider the volatility of USD/CRC pairs and global markets. Always test leverage in a demo account first.
Risk Management Techniques
Never risk more than 1-2% of your account on a single trade. Use stop-loss orders to limit losses. Calculate your position size based on your account balance, leverage, and risk percentage. For example, with a $5,000 account and 1:20 leverage, risking 2% means a $100 maximum loss per trade.
Margin Calls and Liquidation
High leverage increases the chance of margin calls. If your account equity falls below the margin requirement, the broker will close your positions. In Costa Rica, brokers may have different margin policies. Always maintain a buffer of at least 50% above the margin requirement.
