How to Read Forex Charts
What Are Forex Charts?
Forex charts are graphical representations of currency pair price movements over time. For Ecuador traders, the most relevant pairs are those involving the U.S. dollar (USD), such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY. Since Ecuador uses the dollar as its official currency, trading these pairs eliminates the need for currency conversion, making it easier to track profits and losses in your local currency.
Types of Forex Charts
There are three main chart types: line charts, bar charts, and candlestick charts. Line charts connect closing prices over a period, providing a simple overview. Bar charts show the open, high, low, and close (OHLC) for each period. Candlestick charts, the most popular among Ecuador traders, display the same data in a visually intuitive way. Each candlestick has a body (the range between open and close) and wicks (the high and low). A green body means the price closed higher, while a red body means it closed lower.
How to Read Candlestick Patterns
Ecuador traders should learn basic candlestick patterns like the Doji, Hammer, and Engulfing patterns. A Doji indicates indecision, a Hammer suggests a potential reversal, and an Engulfing pattern signals a strong trend change. For example, if you see a bullish Engulfing pattern on the EUR/USD daily chart, it may indicate a buying opportunity. Practice identifying these patterns on demo accounts funded via Skrill or USDT.
Identifying Trends and Support/Resistance
Trends are the direction of price movement. An uptrend has higher highs and higher lows; a downtrend has lower highs and lower lows; a sideways trend moves within a range. Support is a price level where buying pressure is strong enough to prevent further decline, while resistance is where selling pressure halts an advance. Ecuador traders can draw trendlines and horizontal levels on their charts to plan entries and exits.
Using Timeframes
Timeframes range from 1-minute to monthly charts. Beginners in Ecuador should start with daily charts to see the big picture, then zoom into 4-hour or 1-hour charts for entry points. Since Ecuador is in the Eastern Time zone, the forex market opens at 5:00 PM ET on Sunday, which is ideal for planning weekly trades. Day traders may prefer the 15-minute chart during the overlap of the London and New York sessions.
