How to Read Forex Charts
Understanding Forex Chart Types
There are three main chart types: line charts, bar charts, and candlestick charts. Line charts connect closing prices with a continuous line, offering a simple view of trends. Bar charts show the open, high, low, and close (OHLC) for each period. Candlestick charts are the most popular among Burkina Faso traders because they visually represent price action with bodies and wicks. Each candlestick shows the open, high, low, and close within a specific time frame, such as 1 hour or 1 day.
Key Chart Components
Every forex chart has a horizontal axis (time) and a vertical axis (price). The time frame can be set to minutes, hours, days, or weeks. The price axis shows the exchange rate of a currency pair, such as EUR/USD or USD/JPY. For Burkina Faso traders, USD pairs are most relevant because the local currency (CFA franc) is pegged to the euro, but USD is commonly used for trading.
Reading Candlestick Patterns
A candlestick has a body and wicks (shadows). The body represents the range between open and close. If the close is higher than the open, the body is often green or white (bullish). If the close is lower, the body is red or black (bearish). The wicks show the highest and lowest prices during the period. Common patterns include the doji (indecision), hammer (potential reversal), and engulfing (strong momentum). Practice identifying these on a demo account before trading real money.
Support and Resistance Levels
Support is a price level where buying pressure is strong enough to prevent further decline. Resistance is where selling pressure halts an uptrend. These levels are identified by looking for price points where the market has reversed multiple times. Burkina Faso traders can draw horizontal lines on their charts to mark these zones. Combining support/resistance with candlestick patterns increases trade accuracy.
Trend Lines and Indicators
Trend lines connect higher lows (uptrend) or lower highs (downtrend). They help you trade in the direction of the market. Common indicators include moving averages (MA), relative strength index (RSI), and MACD. Moving averages smooth price data to identify trends. RSI measures overbought or oversold conditions. MACD shows momentum changes. Use these tools on MT4 or TradingView, which are available for Burkina Faso traders via mobile or desktop.
