How to Manage Risk in Forex Trading
Why Risk Management Matters for Uzbek Traders
Forex trading involves significant risk, and without proper management, you can lose your entire deposit. In Uzbekistan, where the local currency (UZS) can be volatile, trading in USD-denominated accounts helps reduce currency risk. The local financial authority enforces rules to protect retail traders, but you must take personal responsibility for risk control.
Key Risk Management Techniques
1. Use Stop-Loss Orders: Always set a stop-loss order on every trade. This automatically closes your position if the market moves against you by a certain amount. For example, if you buy EUR/USD at 1.1000, set a stop-loss at 1.0950 to limit your loss to 50 pips.
2. Limit Leverage: High leverage can amplify both gains and losses. In Uzbekistan, many brokers offer leverage up to 1:500, but as a retail trader, you should use no more than 1:10. This reduces the risk of a margin call wiping out your account.
3. Risk Per Trade: Never risk more than 1-2% of your trading capital on a single trade. For a $1,000 account, that means risking only $10-$20 per trade. This ensures that a few losses won't destroy your account.
4. Diversify Your Trades: Avoid putting all your capital into one currency pair. Spread risk across major pairs like EUR/USD, USD/JPY, and GBP/USD, or consider commodities like gold if your broker offers them.
5. Keep a Trading Journal: Record every trade, including entry, exit, stop-loss, and take-profit levels. Reviewing your journal helps identify mistakes and improve your strategy over time.
