How to Manage Risk in Forex Trading
Why Risk Management Matters for Israeli Forex Traders
Forex trading involves significant leverage and market exposure. Without proper risk management, a single bad trade can wipe out your account. In Israel, the local financial authority sets strict rules for brokers to protect retail traders, but you still need to take personal responsibility. Risk management helps you survive losing streaks and grow your account steadily.
Key Risk Management Techniques
1. Use Stop-Loss Orders: Always set a stop-loss for every trade. A good rule is to risk no more than 1-2% of your account balance per trade. For example, if you have 10,000 USD, your maximum loss per trade should be 200 USD. This protects you from sudden market moves.
2. Control Leverage: High leverage amplifies both gains and losses. In Israel, some brokers offer leverage up to 1:100, but for retail traders, 1:10 to 1:30 is safer. Use leverage conservatively, especially on volatile pairs like USD/ILS.
3. Diversify Your Trades: Don't put all your capital into one currency pair. Spread your risk across different pairs (e.g., EUR/USD, GBP/JPY, USD/CHF) to reduce exposure to a single economy.
4. Keep a Trading Journal: Record every trade, including entry, exit, stop-loss, and reasoning. This helps you identify patterns and improve your strategy over time.
5. Use Proper Position Sizing: Calculate your position size based on your stop-loss distance and account size. For example, if your stop-loss is 50 pips and you risk 200 USD, your position size should be 4 mini lots (40,000 units).
