How to Install Expert Advisor on MT4
What is an Expert Advisor (EA)?
An Expert Advisor is a software program that runs on the MT4 platform to automatically execute trades based on predefined rules. For Saudi Arabia traders, EAs are useful for algorithmic trading without emotional interference, especially when using Islamic accounts that comply with Sharia law. Ensure your EA is compatible with your broker’s server time and trading conditions.
Step 1: Download the EA File
First, obtain the EA file (usually with a .ex4 or .mq4 extension) from a trusted source. Avoid free EAs from unverified websites, as they may contain malware. Many Saudi traders buy EAs from reputable developers or use free ones from the MQL5 community. Always scan the file with antivirus software before installation.
Step 2: Locate the MT4 Data Folder
Open your MT4 platform, go to the 'File' menu, and select 'Open Data Folder'. This will open the directory where MT4 stores all files. Navigate to the 'MQL4' folder, then 'Experts' subfolder. Copy and paste your EA file into this 'Experts' folder. This step is the same for all MT4 versions, but ensure your MT4 is closed during the process.
Step 3: Restart MT4 and Attach the EA
Close and reopen MT4. In the Navigator panel (press Ctrl+N), expand 'Expert Advisors' to see your EA. Drag the EA onto a chart. A settings window will appear. Enable 'Allow Automated Trading' and 'Allow Live Trading' in the Common tab. Also, check the 'Allow DLL imports' if the EA requires it. Confirm the settings and the EA will start working.
Step 4: Enable Automated Trading Globally
On the MT4 toolbar, click the 'AutoTrading' button (a green play icon) to enable automated trading. If it’s not green, click it to turn it on. Also, go to Tools > Options > Expert Advisors and ensure 'Allow Automated Trading' is checked. Without this, your EA will not execute trades, even if attached to a chart.
Step 5: Test the EA on a Demo Account
Before using the EA with real funds, test it on a demo account for at least a week. Saudi traders should use a demo account that mirrors live market conditions, including spreads and execution speed. This helps verify the EA’s performance and ensures it works with your broker’s server time (usually GMT+3 for Saudi Arabia).
