How to Install Expert Advisor on MT4
What is an Expert Advisor?
An Expert Advisor (EA) is a program that runs on the MT4 platform to automatically execute trades based on predefined rules. For Cambodia retail traders, EAs can help eliminate emotional trading and allow 24/7 market monitoring. EAs are written in MQL4 language and come as .ex4 (compiled) or .mq4 (source) files.
Step 1: Choose a Broker That Supports EAs
Not all brokers allow EA trading. For Cambodia, select a broker regulated by the local financial authority that explicitly permits automated trading. Popular choices include Exness, IC Markets, and FP Markets — all accept Cambodia clients and offer USD accounts. Ensure the broker supports MT4 and does not restrict scalping or hedging if your EA uses those strategies.
Step 2: Download the EA File
Obtain the EA file from a trusted source. Avoid free EAs from unknown websites — many are scams. Use the MQL5 marketplace or purchase from verified developers. For Cambodia traders, it is wise to test any EA on a demo account first for at least two weeks.
Step 3: Install the EA in MT4
Open MT4 and go to File > Open Data Folder. Navigate to MQL4 > Experts. Copy your EA file (e.g., MyEA.ex4) into this folder. Restart MT4 or right-click on the Navigator panel and select Refresh. Your EA will appear under Expert Advisors.
Step 4: Attach the EA to a Chart
Drag the EA from Navigator onto a chart (e.g., EURUSD). A settings window will appear. Adjust parameters such as lot size, risk percentage, or take profit levels according to your strategy. Enable 'Allow Automated Trading' in the Common tab. Click OK.
Step 5: Enable Automated Trading in MT4
Click the AutoTrading button on the MT4 toolbar (it should turn green). Also, go to Tools > Options > Expert Advisors and check 'Allow Automated Trading'. Ensure your broker’s server allows EA trading — some require a separate request.
Step 6: Monitor and Optimize
After installation, monitor the EA’s performance regularly. Use a VPS for uninterrupted operation. Backtest the EA on historical data for USD pairs to ensure it works under Cambodia-specific trading conditions (e.g., low spreads during Asian session).
