How to Install Expert Advisor on MT4
What is an Expert Advisor?
An Expert Advisor is a software program that runs on MT4 to automatically execute trades based on predefined rules. For Bolivia traders, EAs can be particularly useful for trading during global market hours when you may be asleep or busy.
Step 1: Download the EA File
Obtain the EA file (usually with .ex4 or .mq4 extension) from a trusted source. Avoid downloading from unverified forums or free websites, as these may contain malware. Many reputable brokers provide EAs for their clients.
Step 2: Locate the MT4 Data Folder
Open MT4, go to 'File' in the top menu, and select 'Open Data Folder'. This opens the directory where MT4 stores all files. For Bolivia users, note that MT4 may be installed in Spanish—'Archivo' > 'Abrir Carpeta de Datos'.
Step 3: Place the EA in the Experts Folder
Navigate to the 'MQL4' folder, then 'Experts'. Copy and paste your EA file here. If the EA has a .mq4 source code, place it in the same folder. Restart MT4 to load the EA.
Step 4: Attach the EA to a Chart
Drag the EA from the Navigator panel (View > Navigator) onto any currency chart, such as EUR/USD or USD/BOB (if available). A settings window will appear—adjust parameters like lot size, risk percentage, and stop loss as needed.
Step 5: Enable Automated Trading
Go to 'Tools' > 'Options' > 'Expert Advisors' tab. Tick 'Allow Automated Trading' and also 'Allow DLL imports' if required. Ensure the EA icon on the chart shows a smiley face (not a red frowny face).
