How to Do Technical Analysis in Forex
Understanding Price Charts
Every technical analysis starts with a price chart. The most common chart type is the candlestick chart, which shows the open, high, low, and close price for a specific time period. For Liberia traders, start with daily charts because they provide a clear view of long-term trends. You can access free charts on TradingView or MetaTrader 4 (MT4), both available for download on Android and iOS devices. Look for patterns like bullish engulfing or doji candles to identify potential reversals.
Identifying Support and Resistance
Support is a price level where buying pressure is strong enough to prevent the price from falling further. Resistance is where selling pressure stops the price from rising. To draw these levels, look for points where the price reversed direction multiple times. For example, if EUR/USD bounced from 1.1000 three times, that is a strong support level. Liberia traders can use horizontal lines on TradingView to mark these levels. When the price breaks through support or resistance, it often continues in that direction.
Using Moving Averages
Moving averages smooth out price data to show the trend direction. The 50-period and 200-period moving averages are popular. When the 50-period MA crosses above the 200-period MA, it is a bullish signal (golden cross). When it crosses below, it is a bearish signal (death cross). Apply these to your USD pairs on the daily chart. For example, if GBP/USD's 50 MA crosses above the 200 MA, consider buying. You can set these indicators by clicking 'Indicators' in MT4 and selecting 'Moving Average'.
Applying RSI and MACD
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) measures whether a currency pair is overbought (above 70) or oversold (below 30). The MACD shows momentum and trend strength. For Liberia traders, use RSI on the 4-hour chart to time entries. If RSI is below 30 and starts rising, it may be a good time to buy. The MACD histogram turning positive confirms the trend. These indicators are free in MT4 and TradingView. Practice on a demo account first to understand how they work together.
