How to Do Technical Analysis in Forex
What is Technical Analysis?
Technical analysis assumes that all market information is already reflected in the price. Instead of analyzing economic reports or political events, you focus on price action, volume, and chart patterns. For Colombia traders, this means you can trade USD/COP, EUR/USD, or GBP/JPY using the same tools—just by looking at the charts.
Core Tools for Technical Analysis
The most common tools include trend lines, support and resistance levels, moving averages (like 50 EMA and 200 EMA), and the Relative Strength Index (RSI). For example, if you see USD/COP bouncing off a support level at 3,800 pesos, and the RSI is below 30 (oversold), that could be a buy signal. These tools help you find entry and exit points with higher probability.
Chart Patterns and Candlestick Formations
Patterns like head and shoulders, double tops, and flags are universal. For Colombia traders, the most reliable patterns on USD/COP are double tops and bottoms because the pair often respects key psychological levels (e.g., 4,000 pesos). Candlestick patterns like doji, hammer, and engulfing also work well—especially on daily charts, which filter out intraday noise.
Creating a Trading Plan
Technical analysis is useless without a plan. Decide which indicators you will use, what time frame (1-hour or 4-hour is best for Colombia schedules), and your risk per trade (1-2% of account). For example, if you have a $500 account, risk only $5-10 per trade. Stick to your plan even when emotions run high.
