How to Do Fundamental Analysis in Forex
What is Fundamental Analysis in Forex?
Fundamental analysis studies the underlying economic forces that drive currency supply and demand. Unlike technical analysis, which focuses on price charts, fundamental analysis looks at real-world data such as interest rates, employment figures, GDP growth, and political stability. For Zimbabwe traders, the most important currency pair is USD/ZAR or USD/JPY, but the USD is always involved because your account is denominated in USD.
Key Economic Indicators to Monitor
Start with the US economic calendar. The most impactful indicators are: Non-Farm Payrolls (first Friday of each month), Consumer Price Index (CPI), Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). These directly affect the USD's strength. Also track Zimbabwe-specific news like mining production data (gold, platinum) and inflation figures from ZIMSTAT, as they influence market sentiment towards the local economy.
How to Interpret Economic Data
When an indicator is released, compare the actual figure to the forecast and previous value. If actual > forecast, the currency usually strengthens. For example, if US CPI comes in higher than expected, the USD tends to rise, making USD pairs go up. Conversely, weak data weakens the USD. Always check the market reaction within 30 minutes of the release, as volatility is highest then.
Building a Fundamental Analysis Routine
Create a weekly schedule: every Sunday, review the upcoming week's economic calendar. Highlight high-impact events (marked red on ForexFactory). On the day of the event, be at your computer 15 minutes before release. Use a demo account to practice without risk. Over time, you'll learn which indicators matter most for your trading style.
