How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip in Forex Trading?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in a currency pair. For most major pairs like EUR/USD, 1 pip equals 0.0001. For pairs involving the Japanese yen (e.g., USD/JPY), 1 pip equals 0.01. In Zambia, the most relevant pair is USD/ZMW, where 1 pip is also 0.0001.
Pip Value Formula
The basic formula is: Pip Value = (Pip in decimal places) × (Trade Size in units) / (Exchange Rate). For a standard lot (100,000 units) on USD/ZMW at 18.50, the calculation is: (0.0001 × 100,000) / 18.50 = 10 / 18.50 = 0.54 ZMW per pip. To convert to USD, divide by the exchange rate: 0.54 / 18.50 = 0.029 USD per pip.
Example for Zambia Traders
Suppose you open a 0.1 lot (10,000 units) trade on USD/ZMW. Pip value in ZMW = (0.0001 × 10,000) / 18.50 = 1 / 18.50 = 0.054 ZMW per pip. If the price moves 50 pips in your favor, profit = 50 × 0.054 = 2.70 ZMW. In USD, that’s 2.70 / 18.50 = 0.146 USD. This shows how pip value scales with lot size.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most trading platforms like MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) include built-in pip calculators. Alternatively, you can use online calculators. Enter your currency pair, lot size, and account currency (USD). The tool instantly shows pip value. For Zambia traders, always ensure your account currency is USD for accurate results.
