How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the standard unit for measuring price changes in forex. For most currency pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/CHF, 1 pip equals 0.0001. For pairs involving the Japanese yen (USD/JPY), 1 pip equals 0.01. For Ukraine traders, the most relevant pairs are EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/UAH.
The Pip Value Formula
The formula to calculate pip value in your account currency (USD) is:
Pip Value = (Pip in decimal) × (Trade Size in units)
For a standard lot (100,000 units) on EUR/USD: 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per pip.
For a mini lot (10,000 units): 0.0001 × 10,000 = $1 per pip.
For a micro lot (1,000 units): 0.0001 × 1,000 = $0.10 per pip.
Example for Ukraine Traders: USD/UAH
If you trade USD/UAH (quoted in UAH), the pip value is first calculated in UAH. For a standard lot: 0.0001 × 100,000 = 10 UAH per pip. To convert to your USD account, divide by the current USD/UAH rate. If USD/UAH = 40, then 10 UAH / 40 = $0.25 per pip. This means your profit or loss per pip is only $0.25, which is useful for small accounts.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most trading platforms like MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) have built-in pip calculators. You can also use online tools. For Ukraine traders, always double-check the pip value before opening a trade, especially when trading exotic pairs like USD/UAH or EUR/UAH.
