How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip in Forex?
A pip (percentage in point) is the fourth decimal place for most currency pairs (0.0001), except for JPY pairs where it's the second decimal (0.01). For Turkey traders, the most common pair is USD/TRY, where a pip is 0.0001. However, due to high TRY volatility, some brokers quote USD/TRY with 5 decimal places (0.00001), called a pipette.
Pip Value Formula for Turkey Traders
The standard formula is: Pip Value = (Pip Size × Lot Size) / Exchange Rate. For example, if you trade 1 standard lot (100,000 units) of USD/TRY at an exchange rate of 30.00, pip value = (0.0001 × 100,000) / 30.00 = 0.3333 TRY per pip. For a mini lot (10,000 units), it's 0.03333 TRY per pip. Always use the current exchange rate from your broker's platform.
Example with TRY Pairs
Let's say you buy 1 mini lot of USD/TRY at 30.00 and the price moves to 30.50 (50 pips up). Your profit = 50 pips × 0.03333 TRY per pip = 1.6665 TRY. If you trade EUR/TRY, the formula is similar but uses the EUR/TRY rate. For JPY pairs like USD/JPY, pip value = (0.01 × lot size) / exchange rate.
Impact of TRY Inflation on Pip Value
Turkey's high inflation causes the TRY to depreciate, making pip values in TRY smaller over time. For example, if USD/TRY rises from 30 to 35, pip value for a standard lot drops from 0.333 TRY to 0.286 TRY. To maintain the same profit in USD, you may need to trade larger lot sizes or use USDT-based accounts that are pegged to the dollar.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most brokers offer free pip calculators on their platforms. Enter your currency pair, lot size, and account currency (TRY or USD) to get instant results. For Turkey traders, it's wise to double-check calculations manually, especially during high volatility when spreads widen.
