How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price change in a currency pair. For most major pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/CHF, a pip equals 0.0001. For pairs involving the Japanese Yen (USD/JPY), a pip is 0.01. For Togo traders trading in USD, pip value is calculated in USD to measure profit or loss.
The Formula for Pip Value
The standard formula is: Pip Value = (Pip Size / Exchange Rate) x Lot Size. Here, pip size is 0.0001 for most pairs, exchange rate is the current market price, and lot size is the number of units traded (standard lot = 100,000 units; mini lot = 10,000; micro lot = 1,000; nano lot = 100).
Example for Togo Traders
Suppose you trade EUR/USD at an exchange rate of 1.1000 with a standard lot (100,000 units). Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09 per pip. If the market moves 20 pips in your favor, your profit = 20 x $9.09 = $181.80. If you use a micro lot (1,000 units), pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 1,000 = $0.09 per pip.
Calculating Pip Value for USD/JPY
For USD/JPY at 150.00 with a standard lot, pip value = (0.01 / 150.00) x 100,000 = $6.67 per pip. For a mini lot, it’s $0.67. Togo traders often trade USD/JPY due to its liquidity, so knowing this is crucial.
Using a Pip Calculator
Most forex brokers provide free pip calculators. For Togo traders, it’s wise to use these tools to avoid manual errors. Simply enter your account currency (USD), lot size, and pair, and the calculator does the rest.
