How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price movement in a currency pair. For most major pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/CHF), 1 pip equals 0.0001. For JPY pairs (USD/JPY), 1 pip equals 0.01. For Timor-Leste traders, understanding pip value is critical for position sizing and risk management.
Pip Value Formula for USD Accounts
Since Timor-Leste uses the US Dollar (USD) as its official currency, your trading account is likely in USD. The formula is:
Pip Value = (1 pip / Exchange Rate) x Lot Size
Example: For EUR/USD at 1.1000, trading 1 standard lot (100,000 units):
Pip Value = (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09 per pip.
How to Calculate Pip Value for Different Lot Sizes
Standard lot (100,000 units): $10 per pip for USD pairs. Mini lot (10,000 units): $1 per pip. Micro lot (1,000 units): $0.10 per pip. For JPY pairs, adjust: 1 pip = 0.01. Example: USD/JPY at 110.00, standard lot: (0.01 / 110.00) x 100,000 = $9.09 per pip.
Using Pip Calculators
Most brokers in Timor-Leste provide built-in pip calculators in platforms like MetaTrader 4 and 5. You can also use free online pip calculators. Simply enter your account currency (USD), pair, and lot size to get instant results. This saves time and reduces errors.
