How to Calculate Pip Value
What is a Pip?
A pip is the fourth decimal place for most currency pairs (0.0001) and the second decimal place for JPY pairs (0.01). For example, if EUR/USD moves from 1.1000 to 1.1001, that is a one-pip movement. In Tanzania, traders often trade USD-based pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY.
Pip Value Formula
The formula is: Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) x Lot Size. For a standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at 1.1000: (0.0001 / 1.1000) x 100,000 = $9.09. For a mini lot (10,000 units): $0.91. For a micro lot (1,000 units): $0.09.
When USD is the Quote Currency
If you trade USD/CHF or USD/CAD, the pip value is fixed when your account is in USD. For a standard lot, it is $10 per pip. For a mini lot, $1 per pip. For a micro lot, $0.10 per pip. This makes calculation easier for Tanzania traders using USD accounts.
Example for Tanzania Traders
Suppose you open a 0.1 lot (10,000 units) trade on EUR/USD at 1.1200. Pip value = (0.0001 / 1.1200) x 10,000 = $0.89. If the trade moves 50 pips in your favor, profit = 50 x $0.89 = $44.50. Always calculate pip value before entering a trade to set appropriate stop-loss and take-profit levels.
Using a Pip Value Calculator
Many brokers and websites offer free pip value calculators. You simply enter the currency pair, lot size, and account currency (USD). These tools are helpful for Tanzania beginners. However, knowing the manual formula ensures you understand the math behind your trades.
